KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) — The 1,000th American serviceman killed in Afghanistan was born on the Fourth of July. He died several days before Americans honor fallen troops on Memorial Day.

Marine Cpl. Jacob C. Leicht was killed Thursday when he stepped on a land mine in Helmand province that ripped off his right arm. It was the 24-year-old Texan’s second deployment overseas.

Leicht had begged to return to the battlefield after a bomb took out his Humvee in Iraq. He spent two painful years recovering from face and leg injuries, all the while pining for combat in letters from his hospital bed.

He finally got back to the front lines, but was killed less than a month into the tour of duty he desperately wanted.

“He said he always wanted to die for his country and be remembered,” said Jesse Leicht, his younger brother. “He didn’t want to die having a heart attack or just being an old man. He wanted to die for something.”  (Read more.)

Dennis Hopper (1936--2010)

(CNN) — Dennis Hopper, the one-time Hollywood enfant terrible who portrayed such indelible characters as “Easy Rider’s” biker Billy and “Blue Velvet’s” huffing villain Frank Booth, died of prostate cancer Saturday morning at his home in Venice, California, his wife said. He was 74.

Hopper, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer last October, was surrounded by his children when he died, his wife, Victoria Hopper, told CNN.

Funeral arrangements have not been decided, but Hopper’s wish was to be buried in Taos, New Mexico, “his heart home,” Victoria Hopper said.

The American film icon made his last public appearance on March 26, 2010, when his star was dedicated on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.  (Read more.)

"Will the woman in the white robe please come to the information booth?"

MEULABOH, Indonesia (AP) – Authorities in a devoutly Islamic district of Indonesia’s Aceh province have distributed 20,000 long skirts and prohibited shops from selling tight dresses as a regulation banning Muslim women from wearing revealing clothing took effect Thursday.

The long skirts are to be given to Muslim women caught violating the dress code during a two-month campaign to enforce the regulation, said Ramli Mansur, head of West Aceh district.

Islamic police will determine whether a woman’s clothing violates the dress code, he said.    (Read more.)

Another One!…Roy Halladay Throws MLB’s 20th-Ever Perfect Game; 2nd One In 3 Weeks!

From CBS Sports

MIAMI – Stoic as always, Roy Halladay’s expression never changed.  Until the end, that is.

Until there was history — a perfect game, the marquee performance of his All-Star career.

The Philadelphia Phillies’ ace threw the 20th perfect game in major-league history, beating the Florida Marlins 1-0 on Saturday night.

At 9:23 p.m., when he got pinch-hitter Ronny Paulino to hit a grounder to third for the 27th out, only then could Halladay bask in his moment — breaking into a big smile and wrapping his arms around catcher Carlos Ruiz before disappearing in a joyous, jumping gray-and-red mob of teammates.

“It’s never something that you think is possible,” Halladay said. “Really, once I got the two outs, I felt like I had a chance. You’re always aware of it. It’s not something that you expect.”  (Read more.)

NBA Playoff Recap: Kobe Makes The Suns Set In The West; Lakers Reach 3rd Straight Final

From CBS Sports

PHOENIX – Get ready, Boston, for a rematch with Kobe Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers.

Bryant wrapped up a magnificent series with 37 points, Ron Artest added 25 and the Lakers held off the Phoenix Suns 111-103 on Saturday night to win the Western Conference finals.

The Lakers and Celtics, the NBA’s premier teams for much of the league’s history, will meet in the finals for the 12th time with Game 1 Thursday night in Los Angeles.

“We’ll see how much we matured,” Bryant said. “They challenged us extremely well in the Finals a couple years ago. Now is a chance to see how much we’ve grown.”

Bryant scored nine points in the final two minutes, including what looked like an impossible 23-footer with Grant Hill in his face and 34 seconds to play. The basket put Los Angeles up 107-100 and the scrappy Suns were finished.   (Read more.)
