Columnist Of The Day: Thomas Sowell; Dismantling America Part IV

How did we get to the point where many people feel that the America they have known is being replaced by a very different kind of country, with not only different kinds of policies but very different values and ways of governing?

Something of this magnitude does not happen all at once or in just one administration in Washington. What we are seeing is the culmination of many trends in many aspects of American life that go back for years.

Neither the Constitution of the United States nor the institutions set up by that Constitution are enough to ensure the continuance of a free, self-governing nation. When Benjamin Franklin was asked what members of the Constitution Convention were creating, he replied, “A republic, madam, if you can keep it.”   (Read more.)

Spain: Bull Jumps Barrier; Injures Dozens Of Spectators

From the UK Telegraph  (Pic and video added by B.S. Report)

Spanish public television showed dramatic images of screaming spectators, including children, frantically trying to avoid the animal after it hurdled a security barrier that surrounds the arena as well as a fence and clambered into the crowded stands.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in the bullring in the town of Tafalla, in the Navarra region.

Some 30 people were injured, the local Diario de Navarra newspaper said.

Most suffered cuts and bruises or shock, but one man was gored in the back and a 10-year-old boy was being examined at a hospital in the nearby town of Pamplona after suffering multiple bruises.   (Read more.)

Study: Moon Is Shrinking

From the San Francisco Chronicle  (Pics added by B.S. Report)

By David Perlman, Science Editor

No word yet on whether "global warming" is the reason for the shrinkage...

The moon may be shrinking, scientists say.

But not to worry. It won’t disappear anytime soon.

NASA scientists studying images sent back to Earth from a spacecraft orbiting the moon have found curving lines of small cliffs on the surface that they say were thrust up as the moon’s sizzling hot interior cooled and shrank the surface over the past billion years.

“This is the first evidence that the moon has been shrinking, and may still be shrinking,” Michael Wargo, NASA’s chief lunar scientist, said during a press briefing Thursday. But it’s not enough shrinkage to notice from Earth.   (Read more.)

Blame Game: Obama Blames Congress For Poor Job Situation

Just a few minor things to catch up on for the weekend now that the Fundraiser-in-Chief has gone on another vacation (Don’t worry though. White House chef Sam Kass went along, so the first family need not eat ordinary human food.)

– The Congressional Budget Office says the 2010 federal deficit will be in excess of $1.3 trillion, as in $1,000,000,000,000+. (BTW, the next level we’ll be talking about out of Washington is quadrillion, which has fifteen 0′s.)

– Despite Vice President Joe Biden’s April boast that administration stimulus spending would spur the economy to add a half-million jobs a month by now, initial unemployment claims jumped a half-million last week, the worst since last November, as national unemployment remains at 9.5% and the economy sheds 131,000 more jobs.   (Read more.)

From the Associated Press and Fox News

A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens for allegedly lying to Congress about using steroids.

Clemens faces charges of obstruction of Congress, making false statements and perjury.

The former Major League baseball pitcher and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, testified under oath at a 2008 hearing before a House committee and contradicted each other about whether Clemens had used the banned substances.   (Read more.)

Columnist Of The Day: Thomas Sowell; Dismantling America Part III

From Townhall.com  (Pics added by B.S. Report)

One of the few campaign promises that Barack Obama has kept was this: “We are going to change the United States of America!”

As in many other cases, those who were thrilled by the thought of “change” seldom seemed to consider whether it would be a change for the better or for the worse. True believers in the Obama cult assumed that it had to be a change for the better.

Now it is slowly dawning on more people that it is a change for the worse– runaway government spending, under the banners of “stimulus” and “jobs” is not stimulating anything except political pay-offs to special interests. As for jobs, the percentage of the population with jobs keeping on declining, even as the administration points to all the jobs it is creating.   (Read more.)
