When I mention that my family used kerosene lamps when I was a small child in the South during the 1930s, that is usually taken as a sign of our poverty, though I never thought of us as poor at the time.

What is ironic is that kerosene lamps were a luxury of the rich in the 19th century, before John D. Rockefeller came along. At the high price of kerosene at that time, an ordinary working man could not afford to stay up at night, burning this expensive fuel for hours at a time.   (Read more.)

Thanks For The Memories…Jack LaLanne; Fitness Guru Dies At 96

From the New York Times  (Pics and videos added by B.S. Report)

By Richard Goldstein

Jack LaLanne (1914--2011)

Jack LaLanne, whose obsession with grueling workouts and good nutrition, complemented by a salesman’s gift, brought him recognition as the founder of the modern physical fitness movement, died Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay, Calif. He was 96.

The cause was respiratory failure resulting from pneumonia, said his son Dan Doyle.

A self-described emotional and physical wreck while growing up in the San Francisco area, Mr. LaLanne began turning his life around, as he often told it, after hearing a talk on proper diet when he was 15.   (Read more.)

SB XLV All Set…AFC Champion Steelers Vs. NFC Champion Packers

NFL Playoff Preview: AFC Championship; NY Jets At Pittsburgh (-4)

From CBS Sports  (Pics and videos added by B.S. Report)

Three teams – and three of the NFL’s highest-profile quarterbacks – have represented the AFC in the past seven Super Bowls, a trend that can continue Sunday at Heinz Field with a victory by Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Don’t expect the New York Jets to be intimidated.

The sixth-seeded Jets have gotten through Peyton Manning and Tom Brady to punch a ticket to their second straight AFC championship game, leaving Roethlisberger’s Steelers as the last obstacle to their first Super Bowl appearance in 42 years.   (Read more.)

NFL Playoff Preview: NFC Championship; Green Bay (-3′) At Chicago

From CBS Sports  (Pics and videos added by B.S. Report)

The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers have met 181 times in the NFL’s longest standing rivalry dating back to 1921.

Only once have they played with this much at stake.

Chicago hosts Green Bay in the NFC championship game Sunday in the teams’ first playoff meeting since Dec. 14, 1941.

The Bears’ 33-14 victory over the Packers at that time put them in the NFL title game, and a win Sunday will accomplish a similar feat. While there’s sure to be mention of the rivalry between franchises with a combined 48 Hall of Fame players, the history between Chicago and Green Bay takes a back seat to a Super Bowl berth being on the line.   (Read more.)

As If We Didn’t Know…Obama’s A Robber; Austria Hunts “Obama Bank Robber”

Police in Austria are hunting a gunman who robs banks wearing a rubber mask of US President Barack Obama – but speaks very much like a local.

The “Obama Robber” struck in the town of Handenberg on Thursday, robbing his sixth bank in the River Inn region since 2008, police say.

His stick-up technique does not change – only his getaway cars.

He turns up in a mask just before closing time, equipped with a silver pistol and a black shoulder bag.   (Read more.)
