Stevie Wonder Receives Gershwin Prize
President Barack Obama on Wednesday thanked musician Stevie Wonder for creating “a style that’s uniquely American” as he presented the singer-songwriter the nation’s highest award for pop music.
Obama, who called Wonder the soundtrack of his youth, gave the star the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during an East Room tribute that featured Tony Bennett, Martina McBride and Wonder himself. The president joked that the group was “the most accomplished Stevie Wonder cover band in history.”
Wonder was emotional at times, thanking Obama for the award and reflecting on what his election as the first black president means to the United States.
“What is truly exciting for me today is that we truly have lived to see a time and a space where America has a chance to again live up to the greatness that it deserves to be seen and known as, through the love and caring and the commitment of a president as in our president, Barack Obama,” he said.
Wonder cited Martin Luther King Jr., his faith and his mother during an acceptance speech that flowed into a set of Obama’s favorite songs. The Grammy-winning musician he has 25 of the awards joked that he looked forward to writing more love songs perhaps a soundtrack for “you know, maybe I’ll be a part of creating some more of those babies.” (Read more.)
B.S. Report–This is the kind of stuff that President Obama is really good at. No, seriously–if he would just stick to doing benefits, and going to shows, I would love the guy!
Unfortunately though, he has it in his mind that he’s some kind of “world-saver.” That he’s not good at–nobody can be good at that! Government officials are supposed to be public servants, not public “bosses.” They were intended to serve a term or two and take their orders from the people, and then return to civilian life and live under the rules they passed.
I’d much rather have a President who serves as almost an official “ribbon-cutter,” who goes out and says a few words when a new business, mall, or shopping center opens. That would not only keep the President busy, but it would keep him from causing undue havoc on the citizenry.

It's against the law...but when I was 15 I wouldn't have pressed charges...
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Authorities say a teacher who was caught in West Virginia with a 15-year-old boy from her school has agreed to return to Massachusetts.
State Police Sgt. C.E. Porter says 24-year-old Lisa Lavoie waived an extradition hearing Wednesday, agreeing to face a charge of enticing a child under 16 in Massachusetts. Police there now have up to 10 days to take her into custody.
In West Virginia, Lavoie was charged with kidnapping after police found her at a Morgantown motel.
Porter says the boy was driven halfway home Tuesday night and turned over to Massachusetts authorities.
The boy’s mother had contacted Maurice Donahue Elementary School on Feb. 13, saying she was concerned about the relationship. The teen was reported missing Feb. 16.
UPDATE:
HOLYOKE – A Holyoke school teacher and her 15-year-old male student, reported missing on Feb. 16, were tracked down in West Virginia last night, and the teacher was behind bars today facing statutory rape and other charges. The two were found last night in a Morgantown, W. Va., motel.
“We have her in custody. We have the student in a safe situation,” Holyoke Mayor Michael J. Sullivan said this morning, adding that the student was not physically harmed.
Police Chief Anthony R. Scott said the teacher, Lisa M. Lavoie, of Ludlow, is being held on a charge of enticement. The police chief said a component of that charge is statutory rape.
B.S. Report–Well, I’m going to say it anyway…there is a difference between this happening to a guy versus a girl. A 15-year-old “boy” would have happily stayed a willing “prisoner” at that motel for quite some time, and likely will suffer little or no ill effects.
Actually, he will be a little bit bummed out that it will never be that easy again for him to get female “companionship.” Don’t misunderstand me…I’m not saying it’s right what she did…because it isn’t, but believe me, this most likely wasn’t that traumatic for the boy.
Yes, of course, she should be fired for abusing her position and taking advantage of a student that she is paid to oversee and to teach. But she herself is only 22 or 24, depending on which story you see, so it’s not that she’s that much older.
If I was on her jury I’d give her 3 months in prison. If I was 15-years-old and in her motel room I’d give her a big…thank you.

Army Has Seen Electronic Warfare Ability Lapse Since Early 90s
FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — For the first time since the end of the Cold War, the Army is updating its plans for electronic warfare, calling for more use of high-powered microwaves, lasers and infrared beams to attack enemy targets and control angry crowds.

The Army says they need more high-powered microwaves...don't ask me why.
The new manual, produced at Fort Leavenworth and set for release Thursday, also is aimed at protecting soldiers against remote-controlled roadside bombs and other nontraditional warfare used by increasingly sophisticated insurgents.
“The war in Iraq began to make us understand that there are a lot of targets that we should be going after in the offensive or defensive mode to protect ourselves,” said Col. Laurie Buckhout, chief of the Army’s electronic warfare division in Washington, D.C.
The 112-page manual, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press before its release at the Association of the United States Army meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., doesn’t offer specifics on new equipment or gadgetry but lays out in broad terms the Army’s fear that without new equipment and training, U.S. forces may be at a deadly disadvantage.
The Army has let its electronic warfare capabilities lapse since the early 1990s, when nascent insurgencies were less sophisticated and less deadly. Army patrols currently rely on specially trained Air Force and Navy members whose electronic expertise helps sniff out improvised explosive devices, which have killed more than 1,700 U.S. troops since the war began.
The Air Force and Navy been urging the Army to develop its own capabilities, and the Army sees the need for a new system more finely tuned to its purposes. Buckhout said using Air Force or Navy systems – such as aircraft that send jamming signals to thwart an IED from 30,000 feet – is like going after “a mosquito with a sledgehammer.” (Read more.)
B.S. Report–You know darn well this will be the one program that President Obama just won’t be able to find the money for…he’s already spent $2 trillion that we don’t have but, just wait, he’ll cut military spending–Democrats always do.

NEW YORK (AP) — Real estate baroness Leona Helmsley’s multibillion-dollar fortune can go to more than just the dogs.

That money is supposed to go to the dogs.
In a ruling announced Wednesday, a New York judge says trustees managing Helmsley’s estate can distribute her funds to a broad range of charities.
Helmsley died in August 2007. She left instructions in one of the documents relating to her charitable trust that money be donated to help care for dogs, as well as other charities.
Manhattan Surrogate Court Judge Troy Webber ruled that trustees of the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust have sole discretion for which charities should get the Helmsley fortune.
Trust spokesman Howard Rubenstein says the trustees will announce the first grants from the foundation next month.

Hey, you promised us the money...typical humans, they can't be trusted.

Okay, I’ll Just Take My Kidney Back
MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A court has rejected a New York surgeon’s claim that he should get $1.5 million in his divorce settlement because he donated a kidney to his wife.

"I believe that's mine...thank you very much."
Dr. Richard Batista held a news conference last month, claiming he was entitled to the kidney compensation because Dawnell Batista was denying him visits with their three children.
In a 10-page ruling, matrimonial referee Jeffrey Grob (Grahb) said Batista’s claim was without merit. The court ruled the kidney, donated in 2001 during happier times in the marriage, was a gift.
Grob said a wide range of items are considered marital property – but donated organs would not be among them.
The doctor’s attorney, Dominic Barbara, did not immediately return a call for comment.
B.S. Report–I’m going to take a wild stab and say this marriage didn’t end on very good terms. When you sue your wife for $1.5 million for giving her a kidney you know that marriage must have turned real ugly.
In other words, he regrets saving her life and he wants his kidney back. He sounds like a jerk but life can be very cruel to men sometimes. This is a surgeon, a guy who went to school forever to learn a very difficult trade.
He gets married, has 3 kids, a high-stress job and apparently, a sick wife. He donates a kidney to her, but 5 years later their marriage falls apart.
Then he looks up and he’s got no wife, no house, no kids, a lot less money, and one less kidney. Life can really suck sometimes.

OAKLEY, Kan. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the mauling of a man by a lion at an animal refuge in western Kansas, but no charges are expected to be filed.
The lion’s owner, Jeffrey Harsh, told authorities that the man was staying at a motel next to his refuge near Oakley and apparently made his way into an outer perimeter lion cage on Saturday.
When Harsh showed up to feed the animals that evening, he found the man with his arm over the top of a gate on the inner cage. Thomas County Sheriff Rod Taylor said a Barbary lion had grabbed the man’s right arm.
Harsh reportedly beat the lion with a steel pipe so it would release the man, then drove the man to a hospital. The victim, Bradley Buchanan of Oakley, has since been transferred to a Denver hospital for more surgery and is expected to recover.
Taylor said photos of Buchanan’s deep wounds appear to show that the lion reached the bone.
Harsh previously has faced legal problems for his ownership of exotic animals.
On Tuesday, the Thomas County prosecutor agreed to dismiss a misdemeanor case against Harsh, provided that he transfers three Barbary lions to the Detroit Zoo.
Zoo officials were expected to travel to Oakley within three months to make sure the animals are healthy before agreeing to take them.
Taylor said no charges are expected to be filed in Saturday’s mauling, providing Harsh follows through on his promise to move the lions.
But Harsh still has two tigers at the facility.
“I hope we find a home for the other two,” Taylor said.
B.S. Report–People absolutely believe that they’re going to make friends with these wild animals. They are going to be the one exception…if I’m nice to the lion we will become friends. They’re wild animals…they really don’t care about you–except when they’re hungry.

Netanyahu believes in smaller government and tax cuts..we can use a guy like that.
Feb. 26 (Bloomberg) — Benjamin Netanyahu plans to apply the same small-government policies when he becomes Israel’s prime minister as he did six years ago as finance minister. Then, his tax and spending cuts helped lift the economy out of recession. They may be less suitable this time around.
The Likud party leader, who has until April 3 to form a coalition, faces a shrinking economy, a growing budget deficit and a frozen corporate bond market. The recession in the U.S. and Europe has clobbered Israeli exports, which account for about half of gross domestic product in a country whose economy is smaller than Singapore’s. His only fiscal tool for the moment is a budget drawn up in August and stalled in the parliament.
“Israel must take steps in same spirit as the U.S. and Europe, to allow an even bigger deficit,” said Avi Ben Bassat, a professor of economics at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. “The situation requires a change in economic policy.”
Netanyahu’s plans for the economy may encounter objections from his future partners. Although assembling his coalition could take several weeks, one probable member, the Shas party, said during the election campaign that it would seek to restore child allowances that had been reduced under Netanyahu.
Israeli GDP fell at a 0.5 percent annual rate in the final quarter of 2008. The Bank of Israel, whose index of leading indicators posted its steepest drop in January since records began in 1975, forecasts a 0.8 percent decline in GDP this year. Merchandise exports fell 26 percent in January to $3.18 billion from $4.32 billion a year ago. (Read more.)
B.S. Report–They have a crazy political system in Israel that allows even the most radical factions with nearly zero support to have seats in the Knesset, thus it is necessary to form a coalition to get anything accomplished.
But Netanyahu would be an improvement over anyone we had running in our elections. He’s actually reasonably tough on terror, and he’s a small government, low-tax guy. Isn’t that the purpose of government: Keep the population safe and get out of the way of the people allowing their own ingenuity to blossom. We’re in the process of government strangulation.

Ingrates Complain About The Free Food We Buy Them
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A cold cheese sandwich, fruit and a milk carton might not seem like much of a meal – but that’s what’s on the menu for students in New Mexico’s largest school district without their lunch money.
(B.S.–It seems like a damn good meal for free; and considering that it’s a whole lot better than the “meal” the parents gave the kid when he or she left the house…)
Faced with mounting unpaid lunch charges in the economic downturn, Albuquerque Public Schools last month instituted a “cheese sandwich policy,” serving the alternative meals to children whose parents are supposed to be able to pay for some or all of their regular meals but fail to pick up the tab.
(B.S.–These parents don’t even qualify for the “free” meal program and they’re complaining about receiving “free” food.)
Such policies have become a necessity for schools seeking to keep budgets in the black while ensuring children don’t go hungry. School districts including those in Chula Vista, Calif.; Hillsborough County, Fla.; and Lynnwood, Wash.; have also taken to serving cheese sandwiches to children with delinquent lunch accounts.
Critics argue the cold meals are a form of punishment for children whose parents can’t afford to pay. Parents who qualify for free meals are not affected.
B.S.–First of all, I don’t believe in schools providing “free” lunches at all. But how this can be called a punishment to poor people is beyond common sense. Isn’t there an old adage: “There is no free lunch.” That’s still true–American taxpayers are footing the bill– so don’t complain about the menu!
“We’ve heard stories from moms coming in saying their child was pulled out of the lunch line and given a cheese sandwich,” said Nancy Pope, director of the New Mexico Collaborative to End Hunger. “One woman said her daughter never wants to go back to school.”
B.S.–Why don’t you go to a restaurant and do the same thing…you’re not only going to be pulled out of line, you’re not going to get the cheese sandwich.
Some Albuquerque parents have tearfully pleaded with school board members to stop singling out their children because they’re poor, while others have flooded talk radio shows thanking the district for imposing a policy that commands parental responsibility.
Second-grader Danessa Vigil said she will never eat sliced cheese again. She had to eat cheese sandwiches because her mother couldn’t afford to give her lunch money while her application for free lunch was being processed.
“Every time I eat it, it makes me feel like I want to throw up,” the 7-year-old said.

Here you go my dear, will this be acceptable?
Her mother, Darlene Vigil, said there are days she can’t spare lunch money for her two daughters.
B.S.–Whose fault is that, lady? How much welfare are you already receiving? Don’t you get food stamps? Are you working with the local church, charities, and other outreach facilities? Why do you have a claim on my money before you have exhausted your friends, family, acquaintances and goodwill?
“Some parents don’t have even $1 sometimes,” the 27-year-old single mother said. “If they do, it’s for something else, like milk at home. There are some families that just don’t have it and that’s the reason they’re not paying.”
B.S. Report–Nobody in this country is left to starve on the street. Make an effort to go to the organizations that help people–there are so many of them that exist simply to feed people; the least the hungry person can do is find out about them and go there.
My grandfather owned a restaurant and he used to feed the local area bums who would come in and hit him up for a meal. He was not a wealthy man and this was quite a burden; physically and financially. Yet, he believed he had a responsibility to care for his fellow man.
He was not an exception–Americans are, personally, very giving. What we object to is having our money confiscated by government to propagate the irresponsible behavior of others. People who get handouts have a responsibility to behave in a certain way–so that in the future they won’t need handouts.
Back to my grandfather for a moment. He would give anyone who was hungry a hamburger. I remember one of the guys who came in for a meal asking for a steak. My grandfather said, “I have a moral obligation to feed you a meal–not provide you with a gourmet dinner at my expense.”
Enjoy the cheese sandwich people–others are working very hard to make it happen for you.

Dentists Want The Lucrative Teeth-Whitening Market For Themselves
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — When Kelly Markos started offering teeth whitening in her upscale salon, she thought it would be a nice addition to her lineup of eyelash extensions, temporary tattoos and custom makeup.
But then an inspector for the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners ordered her to stop, accusing her of practicing illegal dentistry.

Dentists want to brighten your smile...but only if it's at a dentist office.
Markos’ ongoing lawsuit with the state has waded into the murky area of regulating teeth-whitening products that are increasingly offered in settings outside the dentist’s office, such as salons and mall kiosks.
The dental industry claims it’s a health and safety issue; the beauty parlors say the dentists are just trying to brush them out of a lucrative niche.
“As a new business owner, I’m trying to bring something new and innovative to the salon. And then to be threatened to be shut down before I really even had it going was more than a little frustrating,” Markos said recently while blow-drying a customer’s freshly cut hair. “I believe that this is a cosmetic service and we are on the right side of the law.”
But Dr. Leslie Seldin, a dentist for 43 years and now consumer adviser and spokesman for the American Dental Association, said it’s hard to know whether those bleaching trays or ultraviolet lights are sanitary or safe.
In some salons, the whitening is sometimes facilitated by people wearing white coats who hand the trays to customers to put into their own mouths or adjust the lights over their teeth.
But the ADA is worried customers might wrongly think salon employees are health care professionals. (Read more.)
B.S. Report–This is a simple case of power. The ADA is trying to use their political clout to stop “mom and pop” shops from offering a teeth-whitening service.
You see this alot in the cosmetology world where providing all sorts of services requires expensive “training” and licensing fees. I’m against all of these mandatory licenses. As long as the service offered is safe and performed properly, than they should be allowed the freedom to offer their service.
