Obama:  The Time For Talk is Over and the Time For Action is Now

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says the time for talk on an economic recovery package is over and “the time for action is now.”Speaking at the Energy Department, Obama made a fresh plea for the stimulus plan that the Senate is debating. He cited the latest bad economic news of jobless claims as another reason for quick action.

He said: “The time for talk is over, the time for action is now.”

Just trust me. Trust me. Trust me.

Republicans and some Democrats have expressed reservations about the growing price tag of the package—more than $900 billion. Senate Democratic leaders hope to have a bill completed by Friday.

Earlier today, Obama warned that failure to pass an economic recovery package could plunge the nation into an even longer, perhaps irreversible recession, as senators searched for compromises to whittle down the enormous bill.

Senate moderates gathered behind closed doors in an effort to find at least $50 billion in spending reductions that might make the $900 billion-plus package more palatable to centrists. Democratic leaders hoped to pass the legislation by Friday at the latest.  (Read more.)

B.S. Report–The scariest thing about President Obama is how absolutely “certain” he is about everything.  “The time for talk about the “stimulus” package is over. ”  Why?  Just because he wants that to be the case?  Well, that doesn’t make it so.  “Global warming is no longer a theory it’s a fact.”  Not so fast, Mr. President.  There are quite a few people who don’t buy the whole global warming thing–and don’t want to risk our country’s economic welfare on policies based on it, either.

You can go on and on with this guy.  There are many of us that are just as certain that he’s wrong about these things.  And he’s the one that wants to “fundamentally” change the United States into a place that’s different than the Founders’ intended.  Think about that…He wants to change the most successful nation in the history of the world.  He’s the one that should be showing a little humility.

Instead, this guy is arrogant.  Why?  Aside from being elected to political office, he has absolutely zero actual accomplishments.  Is he a nice guy?  Maybe.  A good guy to have a beer with?  Probably.  But he seems completely in over his head as President of the United States.

His whole plan is based on rushing his agenda through before us unwilling dupes have a chance to evaluate his plans and figure out whether they have any merit.  If you look at the polls, people are starting to do just that.  Hope and change is beginning to give way to skepticism.  The moment Obama is measured in terms of tangible results he is going to be found wanting.  That’s why he is in such a hurry.  His plans are bound to fail…just as Socialism always has.

Woman Ignores 700 reminders to pay $30,000 in parking ticket fines…time to go to jail.

This is so unfair, shouldn't you have at least warned me?

VIENNA – An Austrian woman has begun a 500-day jail sentence for ignoring parking tickets and failing to pay a cumulative fine of around 24,000 euros ($30,860), police said Tuesday.

They said the 38-year-old civil servant from the southern city of Graz was jailed after ignoring 700 attempts by local authorities to notify her of the fines over a 2-year period.

“Of course we have had people ignore three, four, five or even 10 reminders, but 700 … that is unheard of,” said police official Herbert Mattersdorfer.

PATNA, India (Reuters) – An Indian court sentenced a 75-year-old doctor to jail for accepting half a dollar as a bribe nearly a quarter of a century ago, officials said Wednesday.

India’s federal police caught Balgovind Prasad accepting 25 rupees (51 cents) from a sweeper in 1985 for issuing a fake medical certificate, police said.

The case dragged on for years and Prasad was convicted in 1992 and given a one-year jail term. He was freed as he appealed the sentence.

Tuesday, a higher court in India’s eastern state of Bihar state reduced the one-year term to three months, saying the bribe amount was too small, but directed the police to take Prasad into custody as he was guilty of the crime.

“The case was also dragging and the bribe money was too small, so Prasad thought he would get a reprieve from the court,” prosecution lawyer Vipin Kumar Sinha told reporters after the verdict. “But all the charges has been proved against him.”

Indian justice is often delivered at a glacial pace and a case can drag for decades with endless hearings.

B.S. Report–There is an old saying that justice delayed is justice denied.  We constantly bitch and moan about our court system-and for good reason.  But this is ridiculous.  The guy was convicted in 1992, and his case just came up now? I wonder if it’s the same for violent criminals?

The guy’s a doctor…I wonder if it will hurt his practice.  What will he say when they ask him in prison, “Hey Doc, what you in for?”  Will he answer:  “I stole 50 cents.”  He might be so embarrassed that he stole so little that he tells them, “Grand Theft.  Yep, that was me who pulled the $10 million Gandrudi heist.”

Canadian woman, 60, gives birth to twins: report

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) – A 60-year-old woman in the Western Canadian city of Calgary has given birth to twins after going to India for fertility treatments, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp reported on its website on Thursday.

The report said the twins, both boys, were seven weeks prematurely delivered by caesarean section. Though one is breathing with the help of special equipment, doctors said the twins are doing well but will be kept in hospital until they gain weight and both can breathe on their own.

The woman, originally from India, traveled back to that country for in vitro fertilization using donor eggs after being refused the treatment in Canada because of her age. The CBC said she had tried for years to get pregnant but had miscarried three times, even after surgery to correct a problem with her womb.

While unusual, a 60-year old woman giving birth is nowhere near a record. ABC News reported in July that a 72-year-old woman in India, who already had five grandchildren, gave birth to twins after in vitro fertilization, making her the world’s oldest mother.  (More.)

B.S. Report–Sorry, I call ’em as I see them.  I think this is an incredibly selfish act by this woman.  None of these articles ever have the guts to question the decision of these elderly mothers who choose to have child(ren) later in their life, but also have a child with no father present.  This isn’t healthy for the kids…I’m not saying she wouldn’t be a great mother, maybe she would, but the decision is not an honorable one.  Given the choice, would you want your mom to be 70 years-old when you’re 10?

Children deserve to be brought into the world in the best environment possible.  They deserve to have both a mother and a father…I know sometimes that’s not possible, but in many cases it appears that the woman is having a baby to please herself.  If a 60-year-old woman is that desperate to take care of a child, maybe she should volunteer to help children that need adult supervision.  But to become a new mother at 60 isn’t fair to the child.  Sorry.

So many places are showing record cold temperatures yet California loony Senator Barbara Boxer said yesterday that the climate change bill is one of the first things on the busy Obama agenda.  His goal must be that if he can’t destroy the U.S. economy through his stimulus package than he will do it through global warming legislation that will further cripple the economy.

Tuesday’s Tom Daschle news stepped all over President Obama’s stimulus sales campaign. Likewise, it kept me from writing about Robert Reich’s excellent Salon piece on the larger issues at stake in the stimulus battle, but I want to take it up today.

Reich said something Democrats almost never say: The so-called fundamentals of our economy didn’t start weakening in 2007 or 2008 with the housing and credit crisis; they haven’t been strong for most American workers since wages began stagnating in the 1970s. (Read more.)

TOKYO (Reuters) – A blaze broke out at a fire station in Japan this week after a firefighter left a cooking stove burning as crew members left the station to respond to emergency calls.

Most of the duty staffers were out on a call when their colleague, alone at the station and cooking dinner for the crew, was himself called out.

"Do you think this might hurt our reputation?" Nah.

In his haste to respond to the call, he forgot to turn the stove off, said Seiji Hori, a Nagoya City Fire Department official. Ten fire trucks from other stations put out the fire, Hori added.

“We are an institute that should be in a position to educate people about fire, so we are extremely sorry that such an incident happened,” Hori said, adding that they would consider ordering-in for dinner from now on.

“Pay What You Want” Says Restaurant, “Pay What The Meal Was Worth”

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – A London restaurant has decided to do away with bills for the next month, asking customers to pay only what they want for meals in an unorthodox bid to beat the credit crunch.

The Little Bay restaurant in central London, one of four owned by restaurateur Peter Ilic, will present diners with absolutely nothing when they ask for the cheque during February, leaving it up to them to decide what the meal was worth.

“Anything between a penny and 50 pounds ($70) will make me happy, it’s entirely up to the customer to decide,” Ilic said on Tuesday, sounding confident about the prospects as he sat on a purple couch is his brightly colored, arty restaurant, known for its bistro-style Mediterranean cuisine.  (Read more.)

Obama ‘Stimulus’ Plan Now Over $900 Billion…Can You Answer Me Just One Question Mr. President: How can massive debt and deficit spending ‘stimulate’ the economy?

(AP)–The cost of President Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan is now above $900 billion after the Senate added money for medical research and tax breaks for car purchases.

It could go higher Wednesday if a tax break for homebuyers is made more generous, even as centrists in both parties promise to clear away spending items that won’t jump-start the economy right away.

In an interview on CNN, Obama signaled a willingness to drop items that “may not really stimulate the economy right now.” He also signaled he’ll try to remove “buy American” provisions in the legislation to avoid a possible trade war.

In a victory for auto manufacturers and dealers, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., won a 71-26 vote to allow most car buyers to claim an income tax deduction for sales taxes paid on new autos and interest payments on car loans. The break would cost $11 billion over the coming decade but could mean savings of $1,500 on a $25,000 car.

“Just as we need to get the housing market going, we need to get auto sales going,” said Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.

Wednesday’s session could produce even more generous savings for homebuyers.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., is pressing for a tax credit of up to $15,000 for everyone who buys a home this year, at a cost of $18.5 billion. The pending measure would award a $7,500 tax credit only to first-time homebuyers.  (Read more of Obama’s economic shenanigans here.)

B.S. Report–Finally, voters are starting to wake up to the fact that the “stimulus” plan is a gigantic scam.  Polling data shows that there are now more people opposed to the stimulus package than are for it.

There is an obvious way to stimulate the economy…although it’s kind of boring and drab.  Tax cuts and less government spending…that always does the job!
