Appearing on NBCs “Meet the Press” on Sunday, President Barack Obama said that he cut spending by more than $1 trillion in 2011. However, the White House Office of Management and Budget says that federal spending increased by $147 billion from fiscal 2010 to fiscal 2011.

Host David Gregory asked Obama: “Well, you talk about dysfunction in Washington. You signed this legislation setting up the fiscal cliff 17 months ago. (Read more.)

Gun deaths and injuries have dropped sharply in California, even as the number of guns sold in the state has risen, according to new state data.

Dealers sold 600,000 guns in California last year, up from 350,000 in 2002, according to records of sale tallied by the California Attorney General’s office.

During that same period, the number of California hospitalizations due to gun injuries declined from about 4,000 annually to 2,800, a roughly 25 percent drop, according to hospital records collected by the California Department of Public Health. (Read more.)

Buoyed by their longest win streak in 16 years, the Redskins have gotten into a winner-take-all game for the NFC East title.

It’s a very familiar scenario for the Dallas Cowboys.

Rookie superstar Robert Griffin III already guided the Redskins past the Cowboys once this season, though the stakes are significantly higher Sunday night with the division crown on the line in the NFL regular-season finale at FedEx Field. (Read more.)

NFL Preview: Packers At Vikings (+3)

It’s pretty simple for the Green Bay Packers: Beat the Minnesota Vikings on the road Sunday and earn a direct ticket to the NFC divisional playoffs.

The scenarios get a little more complicated after that, though.

If Minnesota can end a five-game losing streak against its NFC North rival, it secures the team’s first postseason berth since 2009 – and likely sets up a rematch at Lambeau Field in next weekend’s wild-card round.

The Vikings (9-6) would need Chicago, Dallas and the New York Giants all to lose in order to get into the playoffs should they fall to the Packers. (Read more.)

The New York Giants’ chances for the NFC East title have slipped away, and now they will need plenty of help just to reach the playoffs.

Beating a Philadelphia Eagles team with Michael Vick at quarterback in what is expected to be Andy Reid’s last game as coach could prove to be difficult enough.

The Giants have lost five straight home meetings with the Eagles and eight of nine overall in this series heading into Sunday’s finale. (Read more.)

Americans value their children, their safety, and the right to pursue their dreams without fear — and those “common values” trump the rights set forth in the U.S. Constitution, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said last Friday in a speech at a Washington, D.C., elementary school.

In the coming weeks, Duncan said he plans to spend a lot of time visiting schools and communities — to talk about gun violence:

“I want to talk to gun owners and hunters and sport shooters and ask them, what should we do? I want to talk about community and responsibility, and I want to talk about values — because we have common values that go far beyond the constitutional right to bear arms. (Read more.)
